Sedna - The Future of Visual FoxPro
On 13 March 2007 the VFP team made a special announcement to the community. The team announced that they will not be working on VFP 10. In fact, most of the development team has been reassigned to other projects within Microsoft, and some of them have left Microsoft altogether. Microsoft has stated they will continue to support VFP 9, as stated in their VFP support policy, through 2015.
Once Visual FoxPro 9.0 and Visual FoxPro 9.0 Service Pack1 were released, the Visual FoxPro team at Microsoft began work on a new project code-named Sedna. Sedna takes advantage of the many significant enhancements in Visual FoxPro 9.0. This is in keeping with the primary goal of Sedna -- to expand on the ability of Visual FoxPro-based solutions to fully integrate with other Microsoft products and technologies, including Dot NET.
Features in Sedna target Visual FoxPro interoperability with any application component created using the .NET Framework 2.0, Visual Studio 2005, and SQL Server 2005. Sedna also improves the ability for Visual FoxPro 9.0 solutions to be deployed successfully on Windows Vista. Sedna was released in the Summer of 2007. Please see the Sedna Feature Overview documents, which describe the features of Sedna.
Visual FoxPro has also released a service pack (SP2). This service pack includes several critical fixes required to better support Windows Vista.
As stated previously by Microsoft, there are no plans to merge Visual FoxPro into Visual Studio .NET. There are also no plans to create a new Visual FoxPro .NET language. Visual FoxPro continue as a stand-alone Win32 based application, which will run on 64-bit Windows in 32-bit compatibility mode.
